What can I do about COVID-19?

My name is Gordon Doig and I am an epidemiologist who has worked in critical care for more than 20 years. I live in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Like you, I have tried to keep up to date on the novel coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) that started in Wuhan, China. Because I don't see a lot of truly useful information coming from the mainstream media, I have been going directly to credible sources like the World Health Organisation. The purpose of this page is to describe in plain language what the WHO recommends and to provide links to WHO content so you can understand exactly what they are saying.

Do I have coronavirus? What are the symptoms or signs of COVID-19?

COVID-19 usually starts out feeling like you have the flu. You may just feel 'tired' and 'unwell' and have one or more of the following symptoms/signs:

    Most common symptoms:

    • fever (temperature above 37.6oC or 99.7oF)

    • dry cough

    • tiredness

    Less common symptoms:

    • muscle aches

    • sore throat

    • diarrhea

    • conjunctivitis (sore, itchy red/pink eyes)

    • headaches

    • chills

    • loss of smell

    • loss of taste

    • a rash on skin, or discoloration of fingers or toes

    • repeated shivering/shaking with chills

    Serious symptoms:

    • difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

    • chest pain or pressure

    • loss of speech or movement

If you are concerned about having coronavirus, please call your Doctor and make an appointment or go to a walk-in clinic!

  • If you are coughing or sneezing, please wear a face-mask when you go to your appointment.

If you or your loved one develops shortness of breath, pressure in the chest, confusion, bluish lips or face, and they are difficult to wake up:

  • Seek medical care immediately!
